Elegy Examples

Elegy Examples Elegy An elegy is a poem of mourning for the dead. The elegy dates back to ancient Greece, when elegies were written to commemorate a death. Examples of Elegy: 1. "In Memory of W.B. Yeats"-Auden With the farming of a verse Make a vineyard of the curse, Sing of human unsuccess In a rapture of distress; In the deserts of the heart Let the healing fountain start, In the prison of his days Teach the free man how to praise. 2. "O Captain, My Captain!"-Whitman O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, 3. "To an Athlete Dying Young"-Houseman The time you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-place; Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high.
